Riverview Skating Club

Volunteering

The Riverview Skating Club is run entirely by volunteers. Aside from filling the various positions on the executive, volunteers assist by playing music for the skaters, helping with the PreSchool CanSkate and CanSkate programs as Badge Station Attendants, providing baked goods and snacks for our Bake Table which we set up at the Christmas Skatefest and the Spring Invitational, assisting as group parents and helping with set-up and tear-down during our annual Ice Show and many other little things essential to the day-today running of the Club.

A Volunteer Fee is collected at registration, in the form of a post-dated cheque, to help encourage parents to put in a few hours each session to ensure that the bulk of the Club's work is not placed on the shoulders of a small number of individuals, as has been the case in years past. If each parent donates a minimum number of hours to the club during the session, the volunteering cheque is returned to the parent.

We are asking for a postdated cheque for the entire year from StarSkate skaters. If you helped out during the year, your cheque will not be cashed. We are asking for a $100 post dated cheque at registration. MUSIC - Music fee will be a $25.00 postdated cheque due at each registration. Cheques will only be cashed only if volunteer / music obligation is not fulfilled.

* Although Pre-School CanSkate and CanSkate parents are not charged the Volunteer Fee, we still request they put in 2 hours per session where possible. After all, you're in the rink anyways, why not put the time to good use?

Volunteer Opportunities

Fall Session

PA Training — The club conducts PA Training, usually the first week of each session, to allow our Program Assistants to have the knowledge and tools they need to lead the various groups in the PreSchool CanSkate and CanSkate sessions. Traditionally, the Club provides lunch for the PAs on that day and we would be looking for volunteers to provide a plate of sandwiches or fruit or some drinks for the PAs.

First Week of School — For the last couple of years we have distributed information flyers to area schools (Hantsport to Mt Uniacke) in an effort to attract new skaters to the club, particularly to the PreSchool CanSkate and CanSkate programs. This is a fairly inexpensive but labor intensive process which would be greatly improved by have 3 or 4 volunteers to deliver flyers to the schools near their home.

Bring-a-Friend Day — This is the day when skaters are able to invite a friend to come skate with them during their normal session. The 'friends' would participate in all the regular activities that their host skater would, be it CanSkate, PreSchool CanSkate or the Junior or Senior session. Volunteers are required to help with ensuring guest skaters are registered before they go on the ice and to help answer any questions from people who are unfamiliar with the club and it's programs and activities.

Winter #1

Skateathon — One of our fundraisers is the annual Skateathon, when skaters collect sponsors to help defray the cost of their participation in the club. We require volunteers to collects forms and money as skaters come into the rink that day.

Winter #2

PA Training — The club conducts PA Training, usually the first week of each session, to allow our Program Assistants to have the knowledge and tools they need to lead the various groups in the PreSchool CanSkate and CanSkate sessions. Traditionally, the Club provides lunch for the PAs on that day and we would be looking for volunteers to provide a plate of sandwiches or fruit or some drinks for the PAs.

Ice Show — The last day of Winter #2 session is our annual Ice Show. Many tasks are neccessary to put on this event from creating, setting up and removing props and lighting, making, distributing and collecting costumes, supervising the younger skaters immediately before and after their performances, playing the music and making announcements before, during and after the show and running the bake table and 5050 draw(s). All of these tasks must be done by volunteers in order for the show to happen.

Spring

Spring Invitational Competition — Mid April brings the Riverview Spring Invitational, the only spring competition in the province. This is an all day affair requiring volunteers to run the Bake Table, Bubble Gum Draw, Registration Table, play music, make announcements, provide meals and snacks for the skaters, volunteers and judges, organize and conduct medal and trophy presentations and many other tasks.

Year Round Opportunties

Music Room Attendant

Many people are intimidated by the thought of having to play music. "What if I get it wrong?" & "I don't know anything about that stuff." are comments we hear all time. This is actually one of the best jobs there is at the Club. Our Music Coordiantor, or the Music Room Attendant on a given day, provides all the required training and will stay with you as long as required to ensure you are comfortable with the job. Best of all, you get to sit in a nice, warm room with the best view of the ice. Furthermore, because most of the club's day-to-day business is conducted in and around the Music Room, you can gain a better idea of what's going on in the club and will have an opportunity to ask questions and offer your opinions on how we can do things better.

Badge Station Attendant

The Badge Station Attendant provides support to the Coaches and Program Assistants on the ice by ensuring that all the materials needed for the CanSkate sessions are available before the start of each session. Attendants also take care of the PA sign-in sheet, hand out any materials and props required during the session, fill out and distribute badges and new name tags when skaters pass their stages and collect all the materials at the end of the session and return them to storage.

Unfortunately, this job involves standing in the cold but, if you dress warmly, you will find that you are quite busy for most of the session and really don't feel the cold.

Program Assistant

While the majority of our PAs come fro the ranks of trhe Junior and Senior skaters, parents are also encouraged to come out and get involved on the ice with our Learn-to-Skate prgrams. All you need is a fun attitude, a willingness to learn and a small amount of skating ability. This is a great way for parents who skated in their youth to stay involved in skating. The Club provides all required training, all you need are skates and your enthusiasm.
If you're interested in becoming involved as a PA, see Lee-Anne before or after any CanSkate or PreSchool CanSkate session.
