Riverview Skating Club

Volunteering

The Riverview Skating Club is run entirely by volunteers. Aside from filling the various positions on the executive, volunteers assist by playing music for the skaters, helping with the KidSkate and CanSkate programs as Badge Station Attendants, providing baked goods and snacks for our Bake Table which we set up at the Christamas Skatefest and the Spring Invitational, assisting as group parents and helping with set-up and tear-down during our annual Ice Show and many other little things essential to the day-today running of the Club.

Our volunteers' efforts are managed by Lesley Bishop, our Volunteer Coordinator. A Volunteer Fee is collected at registration, in the form of a post-dated cheque, to help encourage parents to put in a few hours each session to ensure that the bulk of the Club's work is not placed on the shoulders of a small number of individuals, as has been the case in years past. If each parent donates a minimum number of hours to the club during the session, the volunteering cheque is returned to the parent. These fees are based on a skater registered a minimum of two days per week and are set according to the level of each skater and break down as follows:

Skater's LevelVolunteer Fee
KidSkate/CanSkate No Fee*
Junior Development $20
Junior $30
Seniors $40

If a skater is only registered for 1 day per week, the Volunteer Fee is halved.

* Although KidSKate and CanSKate parents are not charged the Volunteer Fee, we still request they put in 2 hours per session where possible. After all, you're in the rink anyways, why not put the time to good use?

If anyone has any questions regarding volunteering, please contact Lesley using the link to our contact page .

Volunteer Opportunities

Music Room Attendant

Many people are intimidated by the thought of having to play music. "What if I get it wrong?" & "I don't know anything about that stuff." are comments we hear all time. This is actually one of the best jobs there is at the Club. Our Music Coordiantor, or the Music Room Attendant on a given day, provides all the required training and will stay with you as long as required to ensure you are comfortable with the job. Best of all, you get to sit in a nice, warm room with the best view of the ice. Furthermore, because most of the club's day-to-day business is conducted in and around the Music Room, you can gain a better idea of what's going on in the club and will have an opportunity to ask questions and offer your opinions on how we can do things better.

Badge Station Attendant

The Badge Station Attendant provides support to the Coaches and Program Assistants on the ice by ensuring that all the materials needed for the CanSkate sessions are available before the start of each session. Attendants also take care of the PA sign-in sheet, hand out any materials and props required during the session, fill out and distribute badges and new name tags when skaters pass their stages and collect all the materials at the end of the session and return them to storage.

Unfortunately, this job involves standing in the cold but, if you dress warmly, you will find that you are quite busy for most of the session and really don't feel the cold.

Program Assistant

While the majority of our PAs come fro the ranks of trhe Junior and Senior skaters, parents are also encouraged to come out and get involved on the ice with our Learn-to-Skate prgrams. All you need is a fun attitude, a willingness to learn and a small amount of skating ability. This is a great way for parents who skated in their youth to stay involved in skating. The Club provides all required training, all you need are skates and your enthusiasm.
If you're interested in becoming involved as a PA, see Lee-Anne before or after any CanSkate or KidSkate session.
