Riverview Spring Invitational Schedule Ready

The 3rd Annual Spring Invitational is scheduled forApril 19th, 2008. This is the only spring competition in the province and features events from CanSkate solos to Senior competitive in freeskate, dance and interpretive categories. The schedule is finalized and is available here (MS Excel & pdf format).

For those attending the competition from away, there is very little in the way of accomodations in the immediate area but the new Super 8 motel in Windsor is about 15 minutes drive from the rink. Contact the hotel directly for reservations and rates.

How to find us

We are in the Newport District Rink in Brooklyn, Hants County. Directions to the rink are:

From HRM: Highway 101 to Exit 4 (St. Croix), right off the off-ramp to Newport Corner, right onto Highway 215 to Brooklyn. ONce in Brooklyn come to 3-way intersection at Harvey's Irving, bear right up the hill to another 3-way intersection at MacLean's Petrocan, go left, the rink is right behind Maclean's.

From Kentville & Annapolis Valley: Highway 101 to Exit 5 (Highway 14), left off the off-ramp up Hwy 14 to Brooklyn, left at Harvey's Irving, left again at MacLean's Petrocan, rink is right behind Maclean's.

From South Shore: Highway 103 to exit 8 (Highway 14), north on Hwy 14 to Brooklyn, left at Harvey's Irving, left again at MacLean's Petrocan, rink is right behind Maclean's. Highway 14 does some funny things in Windsor, watch the signs you should be OK.

From Milford / Truro: Highway 102 to Exit 9 (Milford), west on Highway 14 to Brroklyn. Watch for two schools (West Hants Middle School & Brooklyn District School). Immediately past WHMS is MacLean's Pertocan, turn right, the rink is behind MacLean's.

Travellers using Highway 14 should be aware that this route is quite twisty in places and has suffered the effects of the past winter more than most roads. This route can be quite rough in places. Please be careful.

Ice Show a Big Hit!

This year's ice show took place on Sunday March 2nd and was a big hit with skaters and parents alike. THis year's theme of Holidays - Wonderful, Wacky and Wild gave the coaches and Senior skaters plenty of opportunity to be creative in making up the various numbers. Of course the show would be a successful as it always is without the efforts of our 'Costume Department', Teddy MacPhee and Diana Baldwin and our Props Manager, Vanessa Lentz. Their creativity and resourcefulness make the rink and the skaters look fantastic, all on a shoestring budget. Well done ladies!

The show was recorded on DVD this year by Bruce Dempsey, a videographer who records amny events throughout the maritimes. For a sample of Bruce's work, visit his website at http://www.bigaro.ca/index2.html . A brief video of the show is available here.

The Club also handed out several end of season awards at the end of the show. This year's recipient's are:

Program Assistant of the Year - Erin White
PA Spirit Award - Emma Bishop
Volunteer of the Year - Steve Mayo
CanSkate Spirit Awards - Emily Acker & Allison Dill
CanSkater of the Year - Kameryn Harvey
StarSkater of the Year - Jessica Vouligny
Graduating Skater - Brehannah Hopgood

A special thanks to our Club Pro, Lee-Anne Cross. Lee-Anne combines her knowledge of the sport, her creativity and her dedication to the Club and its skaters and creates an outstanding show every year.

We hope to have some photos up in our Photo Gallery soon. Plans are already underway for next year's show.
