What's Going On

Upcoming Events

The Club has a number of events throughout the year which we use to raise funds, raise awareness about the club and to help advance our members as skaters and as individuals. These events are listed below as they would occur throughout the skating season.

Bring-a-Friend Day

In the fall of 2006 we held our first Bring-a-Friend Day where skaters of any level can bring a friend or family member to skate with then for the day. Each "friend" skates with their host during the regular CanSkate session. The idea is to provide increased exposure for the club in the community. All that's required is skates, gloves and a CSA approved hockey helmet. We have a small number of helmets at the rink for those who may need to borrow one for the day.

Skate-a-Thon

This event is normally held in conjunction with our CanSkate Fitness Day during the WInter #1 session. Skaters are not requires to participate but this is an excellent opportunity for skaters to raise some funds to offset the cost of registration for the Winter #2 session with 1/2 of the funds each skater raises going to the Club, the other half being credited towards the cost of registration for Winter #2.

Christmas Skatefest

Held around the first weekend of December, the Christmas Skatefest is a fun, club only competition where the StarSkaters are divided into groups and will take turns performing an interpretive-type solo that they will make up "on the fly" after being given an opportunity to listen to the music for a few minutes. This is always a favourite event for the Junior and Senior skaters.

The KidSkaters, CanSkaters and Junior Development skaters are also divided up into groups according to their CanSkate Stage and age and will compete against each other displaying skills appropriate for the level.

This is a fun event where skaters are encouraged to try their best and where everybody takes home a medal. There is a family skate held at the conclusion of medal presentations.

Annual Ice Show

The end of the Winter #2 session brings the Club's annual Ice Show, where all skaters get the chance to show off what they've learned throughout the year. Each year brings a different theme, this year's being "Holidays", we decorate the ice with props and lighting and individual and groups of skaters perform to themed music in an hour to hour and a half long show.

This year's show is scheduled for Sunday, March 2nd at 2PM. At the end of the show the club recognizes those skaters and volunteers who have gained significant achievements or made outstanding contributions to the club over the past year.

Riverview Spring Invitational

The Spring Invitational is a competition sanctioned by Skate Canada Nova Scotia which draws competitors from all over Nova Scotia and the Maritimes. Held in mid-April, it is the only competition held in Nova Scotia during the spring season and provide an opportunity for skaters to show their programs at the end of the year or to try out new programs that they and their coaches are preparing for the next skating season.

This event is a major fundraiser for the club and draws on every resource the Club can muster to make it the success it has become.
